Perfect Front Door Color With Feng Shui

In feng shui, the front door is considered the mouth of Chi. It is through the front door that the house receives its feng shui nourishment of energy. The quality of this energy determines the quality of energy in your home. In classical feng shui, the most auspicious colors for a front door are based on the compass direction the door faces and its corresponding feng shui element.

For each feng shui direction—and its corresponding element—you might choose a harmonious color or a productive (or producing) color. A harmonious color is linked to the element itself; for example, the east direction is wood, and the colors of wood are green and brown. A productive color is based on elements that produce, support, or nourish the governing element of a given direction. Productive elements for wood are related to the water element and include black, blue, and purple.

To determine the compass direction your front door faces, you can use a traditional magnetic compass, but it’s even easier to use a compass app on your smartphone: Open the compass app and place the bottom edge of the phone against the door—while holding the phone straight out and level. The number shown with the degree symbol is the precise direction the door faces. For example, 0 degrees is directly north; 180 degrees is directly south.

The feng shui element of the east is wood, so if your front door is facing east, with a compass direction of 67.5 of 112.5 degrees, your best choices are the wood element colors:

  • Green
  • Brown
  • Wood tones

If neither of these two colors works with the exterior of your house, you have additional options based on the five feng shui elements’ productive cycle. These are the colors of the water element:

  • Black
  • Blue
  • Purple

The southeast compass direction ranges from 112.5 to 157.5 degrees. The color choices for your southeast front door are similar to an east-facing door because they share the same feng shui element of wood and its harmonious colors:

  • Green
  • Brown
  • Wood tones

The elements of water and earth also bring good energy to this area. In addition, the southeast direction is associated with the money and wealth energy, which is nourished by water. Therefore, other auspicious colors for southeast-facing doors are:

  • Blue
  • Black
  • Very light yellow
  • Earthy/sandy colors

South is the only direction with the feng shui element of fire, so the best feng shui color for a south-facing (compass direction of 157.5 to 202.5 degrees) front door is red, of course! Other fire element colors that work well:

  • Yellow
  • Purple
  • Orange
  • Pink
  • Magenta
  • Coral

Additional colors for a south-facing door are related to wood:

  • Green
  • Brown
  • Wood tones

The feng shui energy associated with a southwest door (compass direction of 202.5 to 247.5 degrees) is maternal energy, as well as the energy of love and marriage. These are related to the earth element and its colors:

  • Light yellow
  • Beige
  • Clay
  • Other earthy/sandy colors

Colors that nourish earth are related to fire:

  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Pink
  • Orange
  • Magenta
  • Coral

For a west-facing door, with a compass direction of 247.5 to 292.5 degrees, go for the colors of the feng shui element metal:

  • White
  • Gray
  • Metallic colors

Producing or nourishing colors for metal come from earth:

  • Light yellow
  • Beige
  • Clay
  • Other earthy/sandy colors
